Shunhua Zhou is a Distinguished Professor at Tongji University. He founded the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Structural Durability and System Safety of Rail Transit, and has established an internationally leading interdisciplinary research team specializing in rail transit system dynamics and construction mechanics.

He serves as a core expert of the joint initiative on the Sichuan-Tibet Railway led by the Ministry of Science and Technology and China State Railway Group. He is also an Executive Director of the China Railway Society, Co-Chair of the International Conference on Rail Transportation (ICRT), and serves on the editorial boards of several international journals, including Railway Engineering Science and the International Journal of Railway Transportation. Additionally, he is Director of the Postdoctoral Research Station in Transportation Engineering at Tongji University. He previously served as Deputy Leader of the high-speed rail construction inspection team under the State Council and as a member of the national expert group on Advanced Rail Transit under the Ministry of Science and Technology. In recent years, Professor Zhou has been continuously recognized in both the lifetime and annual World’s Top 2% Scientists list, as well as the Highly Cited Chinese Researchers list by Elsevier.

Professor Zhou is a leading expert in rail-transit and highspeed-railways, pioneering millimeter-level deformation control technology for geotechnical structures in rail transit. He chaired the committees that formulated two new railway industry standards—including the world’s first technical code for undercrossing operational High-Speed Rails, which has been applied in over 6,900 rail-related projects within five years, and has been recommended by the International Union of Railways (UIC) and adopted by multiple countries.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to urban rail transit and high-speed railway engineering, Professor Zhou has received two Second Prize of the National Technological Invention Award (ranking 1st in 2018 and 2nd in 2015), one Special Prize (ranking 1st), and eight First Prizes (including four where he ranked 1st) from provincial governments and national-level professional associations. Additionally, his research team was the winner of Beyond Engineering in 2022, award by the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) for the most ambitious underground projects and the latest innovations, techniques, and methods in tunnelling.
