Professor Zhou has made fundamental contributions to the field of deformation control in rail transit geotechnical structures, covering both construction-phase stability control and high-precision in-service deformation control at the millimeter level.
He developed system dynamics models for rail–tunnel–foundation interactions under transit loading and proposed a nonlinear stress-release theory to enhance the analysis and design of tunnel excavation. He also established a three-field coupling equation involving flow velocity, pressure (or concentration), and deformation, which has been recognized in academia as “Zhou’s Model”.
His research has led to the authorship of two national railway industry standards and the publication of seven academic monographs. He holds over 90 authorized invention patents and has published more than 200 SCI-indexed journal papers. Altogether, his publications have been cited over 13,000 times. One of his papers ranks as the second most-cited article in the history of the journal Railway Engineering Science since its inception.
Professor Zhou has supervised over 100 doctoral and master’s students. His graduates are widely regarded as a highly capable and well-rounded group, with more than 20 receiving prestigious honors and awards, like Humboldt Research Fellowship, China’s National High-level Talent Program, the National May 1 Labor Medal, and Provincial Model Worker titles. Professor Zhou himself has been recognized with distinctions including Shanghai’s Top Ten Good People and Good Deeds Award.
